Take a trip back in time.
The Stadthalle Wattenscheid was officially opened on 30 September, 1962. Heinz Mesenhol, then head of the Department of Culture and Cultural Affairs, took on the role of a stage manager and lighting technician, personally taking care of the sound and light technology. Besides several theater performances, music was at the core of the venues stage offering: Choir performances, symphony and chamber concerts fascinated audiences.
Soon big names from the music industry are on the agenda. Guest performances by the Vienna Boys' Choir, the Salzburg and Czech Chamber Orchestras in the 1970s are clear proof that the Stadthalle Wattenscheid has long since become an established name. The good reputation of the house attracts the stars of its time, and great actors such as Maria Schell, Willy Birgel, Klaus Havenstein and Hans-Joachim Kuhlenkampf pay their respects in Wattenscheid.
In the 1980s, the company's success story continued. Inge Meisel, Götz George, Ingrid Steeger, Ruth-Maria Kubitschek, Dietmar Schönherr - in short, the who-is-who of the German stage celebrities inspired audiences at the Stadthalle Wattenscheid.
In addition, companies and associations are increasingly discovering the hall as a venue for social events. Slide presentations and carnival-like gatherings, staff meetings, or company celebrations fill the rooms with life, even off the season's artistic agenda.
In 1990, a new lighting system was installed to provide better lighting conditions. The investment of DM 70,000 at that time was already accompanied by plans for a planned redevelopment, which were finally implemented in 2001. DM 775,000 was invested in the modernization of the Stadthalle Wattenscheid.
The Stadthalle Wattenscheid today is a venue for popular Boulevard Theater, with eight plays of different genres per season, as well as a popular location for smaller fairs, musical events and comedians.
